When Two Passions Become One Business
Most people who know me as a graphic and web designer don't know that I am also a certified Stand-Up Paddle instructor, athlete and coach with more than 14 years of experience.
After 26 years as a graphic designer, I have spent countless hours behind a computer. Fitness has always been my counterbalance to the digital world, giving me a way to move, challenge myself, decompress and stay connected to my physical health.
Years ago, I discovered Stand-Up Paddle and fell in love with it. What started as another form of fitness quickly became a passion. I began paddling and training regularly, competing, studying technique and eventually becoming a certified SUP instructor.
My passion for the sport naturally led to teaching others, and without originally planning to start another company, SUP Miami Paddleboard School was born.
Building My Own Brand From the Ground Up
Creating SUP Miami Paddleboard School gave me a unique opportunity to become my own client.
As the owner of Red Cat Studios, I was able to combine decades of graphic and web design experience with my firsthand knowledge of the SUP, fitness and outdoor recreation industries to develop the brand and website from the ground up.
The goal was not simply to create a beautiful website. I wanted to build a professional digital platform capable of attracting new students, educating paddlers, generating online reservations and growing alongside the business.
The result is a website designed around the complete customer journey, from someone searching Google for their first paddleboard lesson to an experienced paddler looking for technical coaching.
Website Design & User Experience
The website was designed to make it easy for visitors to quickly understand what SUP Miami offers and find the right lesson for their experience level.
Dedicated pages were developed for beginner lessons, private coaching, group lessons, kids programs, SUP video analysis, specialty instruction, clinics and memberships.
Strong calls to action are strategically incorporated throughout the website, giving visitors clear paths to view class availability, learn more about a program or make a reservation.
The visual design reflects both sides of the brand: the fun, energetic lifestyle of paddleboarding in Miami and the technical, educational approach of a professional SUP school.
PeekPro Reservation & Membership Integration
PeekPro was integrated as the reservation platform for SUP lessons, class packages and memberships.
Rather than treating the booking system as an external component, the website was designed around the reservation process. Calls to action throughout the site connect visitors with the appropriate booking options, reducing unnecessary steps between discovering a class and reserving it.
This allows the website to function not simply as a marketing tool, but as an active sales platform for the business.
A Fully Bilingual Website
Miami is a multicultural market, and being fully bilingual in English and Spanish gave me another opportunity to apply the same multilingual web development strategies I provide to my clients.
SUP Miami was built as a multilingual website so both English and Spanish-speaking customers can discover the school, understand its programs and access information in their preferred language.
The multilingual structure also creates additional opportunities for organic search visibility within South Florida's Spanish-speaking market.
Organic SEO Built Into the Website
SEO has been part of the strategy from the beginning rather than something added after the website was completed.
The site's architecture, individual lesson pages, headings, metadata, internal linking, local content and educational resources are structured around how potential customers search for paddleboard lessons, SUP instruction and related information.
This gives the business opportunities to rank for both high-intent local searches and informational searches from paddlers looking to improve their skills.
Building an Educational SUP Resource
One of the most important parts of the website is the SUP blog.
I have built an expanding library of original educational content based on more than 14 years of paddling, training, competing and coaching.
The blog goes beyond promoting lessons. It teaches paddlers about SUP technique, stroke efficiency, equipment, safety, weather conditions, training and other topics that can help them become more knowledgeable and confident on the water.
This content serves two purposes: it establishes SUP Miami as an educational resource for the paddling community while continuously building valuable organic search content for the website.
Designing for a Business I Actually Operate
SUP Miami Paddleboard School gives me something especially valuable as a web designer: the ability to experience my own work from the client's side.
I manage the website, SEO, online reservations, content, marketing and customer journey while also teaching the customers who ultimately arrive through those systems.
I can see firsthand what generates inquiries, what converts visitors into students, what information customers need before booking and how digital tools affect the day-to-day operation of a tour and activity business.
That experience directly influences the websites I create for Red Cat Studios clients in the tour, outdoor recreation, fitness and activity industries.
